We believe this lamp is a depiction of Guanyin, the goddess of mercy and compassion.
She is “the bodhisattva who perceives the cries of the world.” That is, she hears people’s sorrows and woes and is the embodiment of empathy, kindness, grace, and a loving matriarchal figure.
We believe this lamp was made in the United States. Chalkware was not commonly made in China, in fact it originated in Europe and was commonly made in the US. It was at first considered a poor man’s pottery, as it is simply plaster-of-Paris. It was easy to mix and to cast in a mold. As its popularity grew, Chalkware gained a presence even in the homes of the rich.
This lamp has been disassembled, cleaned and rewired.
